Today we went to a pumpkin patch with our friends.
Well, not so much a pumpkin patch as a church with a bunch of pumpkins on their front lawn.
But the sun was out and it was a perfect day to be outside.
Well, the high was like 55 today. The high.
And for $3.50, each kid got to participate in story time, color a pumpkin picture, pick out a mini pumpkin, and take a fun hayride.
Except that the tractor took us into some "haunted woods," where there were fun ghosts and spiders hanging from trees, but also some creepy kids who had climbed up into the trees and were hanging there - very still, so I guess they were supposed to look dead.
They didn't wear scary costumes or masks. They didn't jump out and say "BOO!" or anything like that. They were just... there. We moms didn't point them out to the kiddos, but we did get a hearty laugh going over the ridiculousness of it all - kids lying around in trees for a PRESCHOOL HAY RIDE, of all things.
I kept looking at Shaelyn to see if she was scared, but she seemed oblivious to the people in the trees and instead was looking at the ghosts, skeletons, and pumpkins littering the path along the way.
But later I asked her if she liked the "tractor ride."
"No." That confused me - she always loves tractors.
"What did you see on our tractor ride?" I asked, thinking she would tell me about the ghosts and pumpkins - things she loves.
"I saw a boy lying in the tree." Very matter of fact. So she had seen. Before I could worry if she was now permanently freaked out, she added, "It was funny."
So maybe it was a good thing us moms were laughing it up - it took the edge off of what could have been a very scary situation.
Other than that, we had a great time. Shaelyn's just like her mother. She loves all things Halloween, including pumpkins!
